Title: Let's Wrap it Up

Lesson Overview

Today's lesson will give the students time to finish up their inquiry activities and do any calculations that still need to be done. The remainder of the class we be spent doing a group study session in the form of a game. The students will work in groups of three to answer questions on their dry erase boards and earn points for each correct answer. At the end of the lesson, the group with the highest score will win a prize.
The needs of all learners will be accommodated and met through the following items:
  1. A list of the days' activities will be posted on the board prior to students arriving in class.
  2. The list of the days' activities will be reviewed orally with the students at the start of class.
  3. Information and instructions are presented orally and in writing.
  4. Students are provided multiple opportunities to work in small groups.
  5. Students will be heterogeneously paired/grouped for all group work.
  6. Multiple activities are planned for the day, allowing students opportunities to move around the room.

Objectives

Students will be able to determine the mass percentage of water in the two unknown samples
Students will be able to identify which unknown sample was a hydrate.
Students will be able to compare their data to that of the rest of the class to determine appropriateness, providing explanations for any differences

Materials

Copy of official school outline and rubric for lab reports will be provided to students.
8 dry erase boards & markers
Granola bars, popcorn, etc for test review prize

Safety Issues

Only if any groups still need to perform laboratory work:
Students will need to be in front portion of classroom when not actively working on carrying out experiment. Students actively carrying out experiment will need to be wearing close-toed shoes, close-fitting clothing (no loose or dangling sleeves, etc), lab apron, and goggles at all times while conducting experiment, as well as have any long hair tied back. Student work areas need to be inspected for set-up and accessibility of all equipment used during experiment prior to beginning (i.e. students should have balances set up directly next to heating apparatus so that they are not carrying hot glass/ceramic dishes around lab away from benches).

Students will be using Copper (II) Sulfate, which is harmful if swallowed. Avoid skin and eye contact; immediately flush/wash with water upon contact for at least 15 minutes. Do not ingest, contact poison control immediately upon ingestion.

Instruction

Opening

5 Min:
Does any group need more time with the instruments and laboratory equipment today to finish the measurements for the Hydrate Inquiry?

Was anyone surprised by any of their observations or findings from the inquiry activity?

Learning Activities

15 Min:
Have one student from each group come to board and record their group's data on the board
Have all students record all data in table in their handouts.
Write following Table on board, with 2 columns for each group to record their data for their Sample A and Sample B

Sample A
Sample B
Mass Before Heating

Mass After Heating

Total Mass of Water Lost

Does the data from any of the other groups seem surprising to you?
Does the data all seem to agree from group to group?

10 Min:
Everyone take some time and calculate the percent water by weight for the two samples of each group.
Does your data make sense with the calculations you have made from the other sets of data?

10 Min:
So, which sample is the hydrate, Sample A or B?
Why do you think that?
Remember, your typed lab reports will be due 3 days from now.

25 Min:
OK now we are going to do a little test review game. Remember your unit test will be tomorrow.
Hand out dry erase boards & markers to lab groups
The rules of the game are that each question is answered by a different group member in turn.
I will ask the question, or write it on the board, the person answering will write their answer on the dry erase board and wait for me to call for answers.
When I call for answers, each group will hold up their board to see if they are right.
For each right answer your group gets a point.
The group with the highest number of points at the end of the time wins.

Closing

Remember, tomorrow we will have our test on this unit. It will cover all of chapter 7, including bonding, naming, and the inquiries we did. You will also be responsible for knowing the numerical prefixes 1-10 and the polyatomic ions that were on your quiz.
